About the Mineral: Tiger’s Eye

Tiger’s Eye is a member of the quartz family, prized for its silky, fibrous texture and a shimmering optical effect called chatoyancy. This luminous band of light moves across the surface like a cat’s eye. The effect is caused by the parallel intergrowth of quartz and altered amphibole fibers, giving the stone its distinctive golden sheen and layered depth.

Mineralogically, it is a pseudomorph: a crystal that has transformed from one mineral into another while retaining its original shape. Tiger’s Eye begins as crocidolite, a form of blue asbestos, which is gradually replaced by silica over time.
