The Windshield Wiper — Balmat Lavender Calcite

The Windshield Wiper — Balmat Lavender Calcite
Locale — Empire Zinc Mine #4, Balmat, New York, U.S.A.
About this Particular Crystal
Back in 2023, the lavender calcites from Balmat, New York made their debut at the Tucson Gem Show. As a personal collector of calcite, I am always on the hunt for unique and rare pieces. The lavender hue is a particularly hard variety to find, so when I walked into one of the tents and saw these beautiful, rich purple stones in front of me, I was gobsmacked. And I wasn’t the only one. Every fine mineral collector wanted a piece, and dealers quickly snatched them in large quantities, leaving the highest priced specimens behind. I managed to secure one for my personal collection that year, but only a handful of times have I managed to offer pieces for sale here. There is a reason these crystals are so coveted. Calcites from this particular locale are some of the glossiest and richest in a color that is already scarce to begin with. When I first saw them, I asked, are these polished? Their sharp shapes and luster looked too perfect. But these are completely natural crystals. There is really nothing else that compares to them.
I tend to focus less on the “hottest” minerals of the moment, but this year the Universe intervened. The claim is that Balmat is no longer producing any more specimens, so unless you were at the show early, standing in a very long line, chances were you would not be getting any of these last available pieces. I was told it was very unlikely. However, as luck would have it, I asked someone if they had any available, thinking they would laugh in my face, but instead she replied, “Well, someone was supposed to come pick up these pieces, but since she is a no-show, I can offer them to you.”
I was able to get a handful of cleaved pieces, and this is one of the best ones with nice saturated lavender color some translucency, and the classic rhomboid shape.

About the Mineral: Calcite
Calcite is one of the most versatile and energetically dynamic minerals, known for its ability to dissolve stagnant energy and support transformational healing. I often refer to calcite as “The Eraser” because of how effectively it clears energetic debris and helps create space for new insights, emotions, and growth. Think of it as the exfoliator of the crystal world. It removes old patterns so a fresh, aligned layer can emerge.
Calcite’s energy becomes more targeted when paired with color. Each hue corresponds to a chakra or emotional theme, and calcite works by dissolving the specific blocks associated with that frequency. It is particularly helpful in creating new perspectives, bringing clarity and higher understanding. It helps you access a 360-degree spiritual view when you are navigating confusion or change. Purple calcite works with the third eye, establishing an ethereal connection to spirit world to ease out old attitudes.
Calcite occurs in many formations and textures, from opaque masses to sharp, translucent crystals. One of the most beautiful expressions of calcite is the rhomboid shape. These crystals are built on a rhombohedral molecular structure, which means that when they break, they continue to fragment into smaller rhomboids. It is a striking example of Earth’s natural geometry. Rhomboid calcites feel especially precise in their energy and are powerful tools for removing stuckness in a clear, targeted way.
Whether used for meditation, chakra work, or energetic clearing, calcite is a reliable and intelligent mineral that supports both spiritual insight and emotional release. Its diversity makes it an essential part of any crystal collection, especially for those doing inner work or navigating transition.
