Barro Rojo Candle Set, Oaxaca

Barro Rojo Candle Set, Oaxaca
Handmade in Oaxaca, this sculptural pairing brings together two time-honored traditions: barro rojo red clay pottery and hand-poured beeswax taper candles.
This set of two hand-formed red clay candle holders were shaped by Zapotec women artisans in San Marcos Tlapazola using barro rojo, a richly pigmented red clay sourced from the surrounding hills. Each piece is formed entirely by hand without a wheel or mold, then burnished with river stone and low-fired in an open pit. The result is a natural satin-like finish and a slightly irregular shape that reflects its handmade nature.
The accompanying ochre colored taper candles are made in Teotitlán del Valle using locally sourced beeswax and a slow-pouring method passed down through generations. I particularly love the unique shape of these candles.
Together this set offers a functional display of ancestral Oaxacan craft. The ceramic candle holders showcase the earthy richness of Oaxacan red clay and the subtle artistry of traditional hand-building techniques. Perfect as altar pieces or tabletop accents.
