About this Particular Crystal

This celestine from Clay Center, Ohio, displays clusters of delicate blue crystals growing across a contrasting matrix. Ohio is one of the classic localities for celestine, where the mineral forms in cavities within the region’s dolostone. You may also see this mineral called celestite, its older and still widely used name. Both names refer to the same mineral, strontium sulfate, with celestine now preferred in modern mineralogical usage. The name comes from the Latin caelestis, meaning “celestial,” a fitting reference to its characteristic blue color.
