Locale — Sparta, Illinois, U.S.A.
About this Particular Crystal
This large Pyrite Sun is a rare, radial crystal formation found only in a narrow coal seam in Sparta, Illinois. With stunning abstract patterning and a radiant metallic sheen, it is composed of pure crystallized pyrite that grows in perfectly flat, disc-like shapes. These formations resemble ancient medallions or fossilized suns, making them a standout among pyrite specimens. Formed more than 300 million years ago and discovered 300 feet underground, Pyrite Suns are also known as "miner’s dollars," named for the coal miners who once carried them home in their lunchboxes. Their silvery-gold surface captures Earth’s ancient energy in physical form.
Energetically, Pyrite Suns radiate empowering, golden light. Their solar shape aligns with the solar plexus chakra, helping activate personal power, clarity, and confidence. This crystal supports decision-making, manifestation, and energy projection. It reminds you that life is something you shape, not just something that happens to you.
One thing to note, this older piece leaves your fingers smelling slightly metallic.

About the Mineral: Pyrite
Pyrite develops when iron and sulfur combine in low-oxygen environments, often crystallizing from mineral-rich fluids moving through cracks and cavities in the Earth. It occurs in many geological settings and can appear as cubes, octahedrons, pyritohedrons, nodules, and radiating “suns,” depending on the conditions present during crystallization. Its metallic luster and brassy gold color have earned it the nickname “Fool’s Gold,” though pyrite is a distinct mineral with its own unique chemistry and crystal structure. There are many notable pyrite localities, including cubic specimens from Spain, dodecahedral crystals from Peru, and suns from Illinois, while distinctive varieties can be found throughout the United States.
Pyrite is a powerful ally when we have the energy to create but lack clear direction. It anchors inspiration and helps transform ideas into tangible results by providing the foundation needed to make the abstract concrete. Working with pyrite sharpens focus, enhances willpower, and clarifies priorities, making it especially useful for manifestation, productivity, project planning, and creative breakthroughs.
The shape of pyrite you choose further influences how you engage with it, with each offering a distinct way to channel its energy in the mental and physical realms. Cubic pyrite supports stability and structure, octahedral forms encourage creativity and expansive thinking, and pyrite suns nurture personal empowerment and intuitive clarity. Each offers a different energetic emphasis, allowing you to choose the form that best suits your intention.
