About this Particular Specimen

The Tucson Gem Show is vast, with an overwhelming amount of material to explore. At one point, I was ready to leave, thinking there was nothing that caught my interest. Then I stumbled upon a hotel booth run by a delightful Italian mineral dealer, featuring a wonderful selection of pieces from his home country, many dating back to a 1970s collection. I love sourcing minerals from Italy because the production is often smaller in scale and older, like this large singular pentadodecahedral pyrite crystal with shimmering specular hematite.

Italy, and Elba Island in particular, has a long history of producing exceptionally well-formed pyrite. Pieces from this region are known for their sharp geometry, refined surfaces, and distinct crystallization habits that differ from more common cubic forms.

Unlike cubic pyrite, which emphasizes stability and grounding, pentadodecahedral pyrite introduces a more complex, multi-faceted expression. Its numerous faces create a sense of intricacy and refinement, reflecting energy in many directions at once. Rather than expanding outward, it feels more like a system of interconnected surfaces, where movement is distributed across the whole rather than pushed in a single direction. About the Mineral: Pyrite

Pyrite develops when iron and sulfur combine in low-oxygen environments, often crystallizing from mineral-rich fluids moving through cracks and cavities in the Earth. It occurs in many geological settings and can appear as cubes, octahedrons, pyritohedrons, nodules, and radiating “suns,” depending on the conditions present during crystallization. Its metallic luster and brassy gold color have earned it the nickname “Fool’s Gold,” though pyrite is a distinct mineral with its own unique chemistry and crystal structure. There are many notable pyrite localities, including cubic specimens from Spain, dodecahedral crystals from Peru, and suns from Illinois, while distinctive varieties can be found throughout the United States.
