The Tucson Gem Show is vast, with an overwhelming amount of material to explore. At one point, I was ready to leave, thinking there was nothing that caught my interest. Then I stumbled upon a hotel booth run by a delightful Italian mineral dealer, featuring a wonderful selection of pieces from his home country, many dating back to a 1970s collection. I love sourcing minerals from Italy because the production is often smaller in scale and older, like this pentadodecahedral pyrite.

Italy, and Elba Island in particular, has a long history of producing exceptionally well-formed pyrite. Pieces from this region are known for their sharp geometry, refined surfaces, and distinct crystallization habits that differ from more common cubic forms.

Unlike cubic pyrite, which emphasizes stability and grounding, pentadodecahedral pyrite introduces a more complex, multi-faceted expression. Its numerous faces create a sense of intricacy and refinement, reflecting energy in many directions at once. Rather than expanding outward, it feels more like a system of interconnected surfaces, where movement is distributed across the whole rather than pushed in a single direction. The presence of hematite adds another layer to this piece. Hematite helps anchor and ground, bringing ideas out of abstraction and into tangible form.
