Pyrite never fails to blow my mind because of the incredible variety of forms it comes in. This little cutie is a Kansas pop rock, a silicified limestone nodule from the Flint Hills region. These nodules earned the name “pop rocks” because their dense, silica-rich structure can produce a sharp, popping sound when struck against another rock. They formed millions of years ago in an ancient shallow sea, where layers of sediment, shells, and marine life were gradually compacted and replaced with silica, creating these dense, durable nodules. I love the abstract shapes these pieces come in.
