The Tucson Gem Show is vast, with an overwhelming amount of material to explore. At one point, I was ready to leave, thinking there was nothing that caught my interest. Then I stumbled upon a hotel booth run by a delightful Italian mineral dealer, featuring a wonderful selection of pieces from his home country, many dating back to a 1970s collection. Among the special finds was this smoky quartz cluster on matrix from Monte Bianco, or Mont Blanc in France, the highest peak in the Alps and Western Europe, located along the Franco-Italian border.

I often describe French smoky quartz from this region as having a crisp, pure vibe, reminiscent of Evian water. Italian and Swiss minerals, along with other Alpine specimens, are typically sourced from high-altitude fissures or glacial moraines and share this same refined energy. Monte Bianco specimens are highly regarded for their exceptional clarity, sharp gemmy forms, and often dark, lustrous, or subtly smoky-brown crystals. Pieces from this locale are sourced by specialized alpine collectors, with some dating from the 1970s to 1990s, when minerals were more commonly found in steep, high-altitude terrain.

About the Mineral: Smoky Quartz
