Boro refers to the centuries-old Japanese practice of repairing and reworking cloth through piecing, patching, and visible stitching. The term comes from boroboro, meaning something worn or tattered. These textiles were made from nineteenth and early twentieth century scraps of indigo-dyed cotton, joined together using sashiko, a hand-sewn running stitch used to reinforce and quilt layers of fabric.
Kasuri is Japan’s interpretation of the ikat technique, where threads are resist-dyed before weaving to create soft, feathered patterns. This cloth carries the texture, tonal depth, and quiet beauty that define traditional Japanese folk textiles. It can be used as a decorative panel, sewn into garments, or displayed as a striking example of textile heritage and functional artistry.
