This is an incredible piece of black jade from California, featuring a rich, deep black hue. Its abstract, natural form is complemented by a polished base that reveals its inner depth and allows it to stand upright. For a long time, I was drawn only to jade from Big Sur, but I have come to deeply appreciate the rugged beauty of black jade.

About the Mineral: Black Jade

Black jade is a rare variety of nephrite with a distinct history in the Americas. Long before modern lapidaries prized it for its polish and durability, jade was revered by ancient Mesoamerican civilizations, who valued it above gold. It was carved into ceremonial objects, burial offerings, and protective talismans believed to carry life force and spiritual authority.

In the United States, nephrite jade deposits were later discovered in Wyoming, Alaska, Washington, and California. Wyoming’s Wind River Range became especially well known during the 20th-century “jade rush,” when prospectors unearthed substantial deposits of dark nephrite. California has also produced notable jade along its coastal regions, where tectonic activity created the conditions for nephrite formation. The stone’s exceptional toughness made it historically suitable for tools, while its depth of color lent it symbolic weight as a stone of endurance and protection.

Black jade energetically reminds me of obsidian, but feels more grounding, gentle, and fortifying. It supports shadow work and inner reflection while reminding you that you are supported and capable of walking through darkness without losing your light. Rather than expanding energy outward, it consolidates power inward.
