Locale — Koshidake, Saga, Japan
About this Particular Stone
One of the most satisfying aspects of collecting rocks is discovering a variety from a lesser-known locale. Minerals from Japan are rare in my experience, and this is the first obsidian I’ve ever encountered from there. I acquired this piece, one of three, from the sweetest woman who brought over a small selection from her home country. This obsidian feels a bit softer and less glassy than other varieties, giving it a gentler, more easily integrated energy than the typically intense nature of obsidian. It has a really nice, almost waxy feel in the palm.
Obsidian is typically found in areas of past or present volcanic activity where lava with high silica content has erupted and cooled rapidly. Notable sources include the Cascade Range in the Pacific Northwest of the United States, Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming, and various locations throughout the American Southwest including California, Oregon, and Arizona. Obsidian is also abundant in parts of Mexico, particularly in the states of Hidalgo and Jalisco, where it was widely used by the Aztec and Maya civilizations. In the Mediterranean region, significant deposits are found on the islands of Milos (Greece) and Lipari (Italy), which were major sources for prehistoric trade. Additional known sources include Armenia, Iceland, Ethiopia, Japan, and eastern Turkey.

About the Stone: Black Obsidian
Obsidian is not a crystal, but volcanic lava that has cooled into sharp, reflective glass. It is a stone of polarities. It is both deeply grounding and intensely catalytic, embodying the full spectrum of light and shadow. Obsidian acts as a mirror, reflecting what lies beneath the surface: emotional pain, limiting beliefs, and energetic attachments that are ready to be seen. It cuts through illusion, clears energetic debris, and reveals truths we often resist, making it a powerful ally for shadow work and personal transformation. Obsidian invites us to confront our darkness with honesty and compassion. In doing so, we create space for light to re-enter, and for healing to begin.
Black obsidian is the most potent energy of any of the varieties. For those that are interested in working with the energy of obsidian but are not quite ready, working with one of the other “flavors” is a way to do this.
