Physical energy is our vital life force. A version or concept of it exists in every culture: prana (Hindus), qi (Chinese), pneuma (Ancient Greeks), spiritus (Latin), ruach (Hebrew), asé (Yoruba in Africa), orenda (The Iroquois) just to name a few. In the chakra system, this energy originates at the base of the spine at the root chakra (1st) and is then harnessed and converted through the other chakras, starting with the sacral (2nd).
