Lucien Wercollier  (1908–2002) was an abstract sculptor from Luxembourg who worked primarily in bronze and marble, in addition to wood, alabaster, stone and onyx. His work is often associated with other artists of the time sculpting in the same mediums and in the abstract modernist style, including Maillol, Brancusi, and Arp. He did not rise to the same level of prominence however as these discovered artists because Wercollier was actively fighting against the Nazi regime. This would lead to his imprisonment in Germany’s Hinzert concentration camp, one of the main sites where resistance leaders from Luxembourg were sent. After managing to survive this harrowing experience, Wercollier became one of the founding members of Iconomaques, a group of Luxembourg artists keen to promote abstract art. His work memorializes important historical events and notable sites; one of his most famous bronze sculptures is on the grounds of the Hinzert concentration camp where it honors the prisoners and those murdered there.

Hardcover. Text by Joseph-Émile Muller. It is quite challenging to find documented images of Wercollier’s art, and this rare book captures a bulk of his creations in stunning black and white images. There are some small tears to the dust jacket but an overall clean book.
