THE GEOLOGY OF FIRE AGATE
Fire agate is a rare variety of layered chalcedony quartz characterized by iridescent bubbles that appear as if they are on fire from under the surface. The energy of fire dominates this variety of agate in every regard, beginning with its initial formation. Crystals are just like humans in the sense that they are also shaped by the environment and conditions in which they mature. A crystal’s geological history and story are telling of its energetic qualities and metaphysical properties.
When volcanoes erupt, they release molten lava that flows over the surrounding landscape. As this lava cools and solidifies, gas bubbles are trapped within its matrix, creating cavities or voids that fill with silica-rich fluids that gradually deposit layers of chalcedony, a microcrystalline variety of quartz. As the silica-rich fluids continue to flow, they encounter trace amounts of iron oxide that align in a parallel or subparallel fashion. Light passes through the different layers composed of iron oxides and silica, causing the unique prism effect of fire agate that distinguishes it from all other agates. It can only be found in Northern Mexico and some of the South Western United States.
