The Number Eight (Number 8 or #8) turquoise mine in Eureka County north of Carlin, Nevada was discovered in 1925 and first mined in 1929. Since 1976 there has been no Number 8 Turquoise mined, and it has since been swallowed up by gold mining operations. No. 8 Turquoise is known for being one of the highest quality and aesthetically revered turquoise varieties, and now that the mine has been depleted, pieces like this are highly prized collector's items. The scale of this piece makes it especially rare, as it is very hard to find large sold chunks like this still intact; most often it would be used to yield lots of lapidary material for jewelry. Another reason this piece is so special is because it is completely natural (no waxes, dyes, resins, or other treatments).

Only 3 to 5 percent of all turquoise mined is a hard high-quality material that does not need any stabilization. That is why natural turquoise is so valued, being more rare and less abundant. The rest is low to medium grade and is soft and chalky, requiring stabilization. In recent years natural turquoise has been exceedingly harder and harder to get as most of the turquoise was mined years ago.
