Michael McClure was a Bear playwright, essayist, and poet, with a prolific writing career that included over thirty books of poetry, plays, and prose. He was a key figure in the Hippie counterculture of the 1960s, touring with The Doors, co-writing with Janis Joplin, and participating in the Human Be-In at Golden Gate Park. He was one of the six poets who took part in the reading on 7 October 1955 at the Six Gallery in San Francisco that announced the arrival of the Beat generation.
